WESTERN NORTH PACIFIC AREA (180 TO MALAY PENINSULA): A. TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY: (1) AT 03SEP26 0000Z, TROPICAL STORM 17W (SAUDEL) WAS LOCATED NEAR 23.8N 117.4E, APPROXIMATELY 198 NM EAST-NORTHEAST OF HONG KONG, AND HAD TRACKED WEST-NORTHWESTWARD AT 10 KNOTS OVER THE PAST SIX HOURS. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED SURFACE WINDS WERE ESTIMATED AT 40 KNOTS GUSTING TO 50 KNOTS. SEE REF A (WTPN32 PGTW 030300) FOR THE FINAL WARNING ON THIS SYSTEM. (2) AT 03SEP26 0000Z, TROPICAL STORM 22W (KROVANH) WAS LOCATED NEAR 26.1N 130.2E, APPROXIMATELY 131 NM EAST OF KADENA AB, AND HAD TRACKED NORTH-NORTHWESTWARD AT 14 KNOTS OVER THE PAST SIX HOURS. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED SURFACE WINDS WERE ESTIMATED AT 40 KNOTS GUSTING TO 50 KNOTS. SEE REF B (WTPN31 PGTW 030300) FOR FURTHER DETAILS. (3) NO OTHER TROPICAL CYCLONES. B. TROPICAL DISTURBANCE SUMMARY: (1) AN AREA OF CONVECTION (INVEST 97W) HAS PERSISTED NEAR 15.3N 140.8E, APPROXIMATELY 252 NM WEST-NORTHWEST OF GUAM. ANIMATED MULTISPECTRAL SATELLITE IMAGERY (MSI) REVEALS A BROAD AREA OF TURNING WITH MULTIPLE CLUMPS OF DEEP CONVECTION AROUND A WEAK LLCC. A 030005Z ASCAT METOP-B PASS SHOWS A RELATIVELY WELL-DEFINED CIRCULATION WITH 20 KT WINDS WRAPPING INTO THE CENTER ALONG THE WESTERN PERIPHERY. OVERALL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE ASSESSED AS FAVORABLE WITH LOW (10-15KT) VERTICAL WIND SHEAR, VERY WARM (28-29C) SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES AND MODERATE UPPER-LEVEL DIVERGENCE. GLOBAL MODELS ARE RELATIVELY CONSERVATIVE WITH DEVELOPMENT ON 97W WITH DETERMINISTIC MODELS MAINTAINING A BROAD CIRCULATION THAT CONSOLIDATES SLIGHTLY OVER THE NEXT 48 HOURS WHILE MOVING GENERALLY NORTHWESTWARD. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED SURFACE WINDS ARE ESTIMATED AT 18 TO 23 KNOTS. MINIMUM SEA LEVEL PRESSURE IS ESTIMATED TO BE NEAR 1006 MB.
